Between 1846 and 1858 William Pengelley systematically excavated and recorded a many human artifacts and animal bones at Kents Cavern in Devon. The caves came to be one of the most informative sites in the first half of the 19th century. The chambers and passages at Kents Cavern were created around 2 million years ago. During the Ice Age, when temperatures dipped sharply, early humans and prehistoric animals used the cave for shelter.
