This photographic image is part of lecture set on the topic of Samuel Crompton and the cotton industry. The slides originally belonged to John Crabtree, who was HM Inspector of Factories. The ‘box’ shown in this image was used to hide his invention to try and stop other people stealing his design, as he could not afford to take out a patent to protect it.
