finger ring inscribed ‘all joy in God’ (ring (finger))
Descriptions
This gold ring found in Exeter is decorated with T-shaped crosses, these are also known as Tau crosses. The tau cross was a symbol of St Anthony, who was thought to protect against illness and misfortune, in particular St Anthony’s fire, or holy fire, a form of grain poisoning. The cult of St Anthony seems to have been strong in south-west Britain and RAMM has similar rings found near Sherford and Moretonhampstead.
The ring is also inscribed with the words ‘all ioe in god’ meaning ‘all joy in God’. Devotional rings like this were visible signs of the owner’s wealth and religious beliefs.
