photograph of Ellen Herbert (cabinet photograph)

Descriptions

Ellen Herbert began working for Charlotte Treadwin at the age of about 13. She became her assistant in Treadwin’s lace manufactory showrooms at 5 Cathedral Close, succeeding to the business on Mrs Treadwin’s death in December 1890. Until her own death in 1929 Ellen Herbert held the royal warrant (awarded in 1901 and in 1911), and continued in business throughout the 1920s, although she lamented that there was less interest in lace and lace-making. Ellen shared the premises with a sister, and with a Miss West, who restored lace.
