Descriptions
This postcard photograph dates from the early stages of the First World War and is titled “Part of Kitchener’s new army at Exeter”. This refers to Lord Kitchener’s campaign to enlist British men epitomised by the famous poster of Kitchener’s pointed finger and the phrase “Your country needs you!”. The image is believed to have been taken on Church Road, St Thomas and shows a large group of men enlisting for service.
