Descriptions

When new houses were being built outside Ottery St Mary, archaeologists found traces of a medieval farm. Fire had destroyed the granary, a disaster for the farmer, but it provided a rare insight into medieval crops, as the fire preserved the stored harvest as carbonised grains. These included oats, wheat, rye, barley, broad beans, peas and vetches.
