lid from an amphora (vessel (sherd))
Descriptions
This lid would have sealed an amphora a pottery jar used to transport and store foodstuffs. The amphora was made in Gaul (modern Southern France) and might have held olives, oil or wine.
The pot belonged to the Roman military era of a supply depot found by archaeologists on the St Loyes site that lay between the port at Topsham and the fortress at Exeter.
