Ilchinik (totem pole)

Star objects

Descriptions

This commemorative totem pole’s name is Ilchinik, in honour of a very powerful and successful whaler.

The red cedar totem celebrates the historic connections between the Captain Cook artefacts donated to RAMM in 1868 and the Nuu-chah-nulth descendents of Chief Maquinna of Vancouver Island. It stands in the gallery at 5 meters in height.

It was made by senior carvers Tim Paul, Patrick Amos, Francis Mark and Leslie Mickey and apprentice carvers Tom Paul and Corey Baiden Amos. Pole was shipped to Exeter from Canada and carving took place between 6 and 24 June 1998.
