This framed set contains the First World War general service medals and memorial plaque of Lieutenant Martin Hubert Shorto. Mounted at the top is the personalised memorial plaque issued to the next of kin of all servicemen killed in action. On the bottom left is the silver British campaign medal for the First World War. Shown bottom right is the victory Medal depicting a winged Victory.
Martin Shorto was was killed in 1917 in France, having survived being gassed twice, and only five months after he first arrived at the Front. He was buried in the Coxyde Military Cemetery at Koksijde in Belgium. He was one of 75 pupils of Hele’s School who were killed in the conflict. His medals and memorial plaque were mounted in this frame and kept at Hele’s School until the school’s closure in the 1980s.
