padlock and key (padlock and key)
Descriptions
This is one of two padlocks given to the museum in 1889 with the provenance “Two ancient padlocks with keys found in the demolishing of Larkbeare House, Exeter”. Larkbeare House was built for a wealthy merchant in the 1400s and occupied by cloth merchants until the 1880s. It is uncertain when the padlocks were made, but it is likely they were already at least one hundred years old when they were rediscovered.
