Maternity mourning dress (dress)
A Picture of Health: Exeter's Medical HistoryDescriptions
This black silk dress would have been worn by a pregnant woman who was in mourning for a close family member. It was probably altered to a maternity dress from an existing dress. Mourning etiquette in the 1800s and early 1900s was strictly observed and was an important signifier of social respectability.
