thimble of Elizabeth Hilson (thimble)

Descriptions

This thimble is made from a piece of folded silver and originally had a domed top to protect the wearer’s finger during sewing. It is beautifully decorated with punched and incised chevrons and indentations, and an ownership inscriptions in Roman capitals reading “+ELIXABETH+HILSON+HOPE+HELPETH+SOROFUL+HARTES”, meaning ‘Elizabeth Hilson. Hope helps sorrowful hearts’. It was found whilst metal-detecting, reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme and declared Treasure.
