doll dressed as a Red Cross nurse (doll)

A Picture of Health: Exeter's Medical History

Descriptions

This doll dates from around the years of the First World War and is dressed in the uniform of a Red Cross nurse, with a small bottle of iodine in her bag imitating the materials used by real nurses. Her story is a mystery as she was made in Germany and we do not know how she came to the museum in Exeter. Red Cross nurses worked on both sides of the conflict and it is uncertain if she represented a German or British nurse. She now symbolises the common culture that was shared by those divided by World War One.
