Brown glazed vase with incised decoration of frogs and tadpoles (vase)
Decorative ArtDescriptions
The four Martin Brothers produced a great amount of Art Pottery in salt-glazed stoneware from their London studio between 1873 and 1923 (when Wallace Martin died). They created the ‘orange peel’ texture of salt glazing by throwing salt into the kiln.
This aquatic design reflects Japanese inspiration. It was drawn into the damp clay using the sgraffito method.
RAMM has over sixty pieces of Martinware in the collection and every one has a different design.
This object is on display at RAMM in the Courtyard.
