‘midget’ bustle (bustle)

Costume and Textiles

Descriptions

This is a ‘midget’ bustle or dress improver. The fashion for draping fabric at the back of the skirt really began in the 1860s. At this stage, the ‘tournure’ was developed to attach to the crinoline and give additional support for the fabric at the back.

This object is on display at RAMM in the Making History gallery.
