kauri gum (plant: resin)

Natural Sciences

Descriptions

Kauri trees naturally ooze resin that hardens to form amber-like masses (true amber is fossilised tree resin). The resin is flammable and can be used to light fires and torches. Burnt gum mixed with animal fat is an important ingredient in the dyes used for traditional Maori tattoos.
