Descriptions
Gillie Hoyte Byrom hand paints enamels for a world-wide clientele from her studio in Dartington, Devon. She creates portrait miniatures using traditional vitreous enamel skills taught to her in Barcelona in 1990. some are of living people, others take their inspiration from historic artworks.
Original artwork is oil on Wood 62.3 x 48.3cm, at Tate Britain.
Techniques:
• Counter-enamelled with two coats gold flux.
• Gold flux + two coats Soyer opal white on top.
• Hand painted over line drawing.
• Gold lustre used to detail parts of costume and inscription in background.
• Background colour worked in brown using blue 12813, purple 771234 and dark tan 161232.
• Inscription on reverse hand written in gold lustre.
• Fluxed over with three coats Blythes 139.
• Stoned and dipped into hydrofluoric acid, rinsed and refired.
• Polished with pumice slurry using mop on 1400 rpm motor
• Minimum 18 firings.
