Descriptions

Randall-Page is known for his stone sculptures, inspired by the geometric shapes and patterns of nature. Made up of over 600 individual ceramic tiles, Wing embodies the delicate and intricately patterned structure of an insect’s wings on a monumental scale. The artist is intrigued by “spontaneous pattern formation” and “random variation” and exploring the metamorphosis of both life and sculpture.

The subject of this work is reminiscent of RAMM’s insect specimens while the tiles used to make the sculpture are evocative of archaeological fragments that can also be found in the museum’s collection.

The process of installing the sculpture requires a meticulous process which can be watched here https://www.peterrandall-page.com/sculptures/wing/.

After
studying at the Bath Academy of Art (1973-7), Randall-Page undertook a number of significant public commissions, including the regeneration of Castle Park in Bristol and the Eden Project in Cornwall. His public sculptures can also be found in London, Edinburgh and Manchester, and his work is held in many permanent collections such as the British Museum and Tate. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 2015.
