tin extraction waste (slag)

Descriptions

Slags are a waste product from the smelting and working of metals. The Dartmoor tinners mined rocks containing tin ore from sites on the moor and then extracted the tin by crushing and heating the rock in furnaces. Being a waste product the tin slag was usually left out on the moor giving archaeologists clues as to where the tinners had worked.
