Descriptions

This immature female red-capped robin was collected on the Burdekin River on May 30th 1845. Today it is unusual to see this species so far north. In 1944 Miss Fox, a school mistress from Beckenham donated 20 mounted birds from Australia and 2 from New Zealand to RAMM. We do not know how she came by them. Their significance has recently been uncovered by Clemency Fisher from National Museums Liverpool. The Australian birds were collected by John Glibert and John Murphy on the Queenstown leg of the Leichhardt Expedition which ended at Port Essington in December 1845. Most of the specimens are listed in Murphy's manuscript diary.
