fish bone assemblage (faunal bone)
Descriptions
These bones give clues about diet in Exeter during the medieval period. Cod and haddock are the most common species found at this site although conger eel, whiting and hake are also present. It is interesting that salmon and trout bones have not been found. Were they not eaten or were their remains processed in a different way?
In later centuries, fishing for cod in the North Atlantic fishing grounds off Newfoundland became a major industry.
