Descriptions

Gillie Hoyte Byrom hand paints enamels for a world-wide clientele from her studio in Dartington, Devon. She creates portrait miniatures using traditional vitreous enamel skills taught to her in Barcelona in 1990. some are of living people, others take their inspiration from historic artworks.

Techniques
• Hand engraved by Gillie Hoyte Byrom.
• Two coats of counter-enamel gold flux.
• Gold flux on top.
• Applied line drawing.
• Laid transparent black for jewels; laid paste of 23.5ct gold powder for jewel settings and laid paste of silver powder for skirt and sleeve pattern.
• Applied underglaze black and ‘Rolls Royce red’ for chair.
• Laid polar white for pearls, cuff, collar trim and headdress.
• Laid gold flux over jewels and silver flux over silver with Soyer opal white over the remaining area.
• Stoned down to achieve even thickness and refired.
• Chinese black porcelain paint for jewels (touching areas of transparent black which had broken up).
• Added silver lustre to sleeves and touched up pearls and white areas of costume.
• Hand painted.
• Applied line drawing designating gold embroidery on chair back.
• Applied liquid gold to chair and jewellery.
• Finely graded C4 flux applied in three coats.
• Stoned and refired.
• Polished with pumice slurry using mop on 1400 rpm motor.
• Minimum 30 firings.
