Descriptions
One of the world’s more unusual parrots, Pesquet’s parrot is found in New Guinea in primary and secondary forest up to about 2000m. It has a strangely shaped, elongated, beak giving it a raptorial appearance, hence its other name of vulturine parrot. It seems to feed mostly on figs, sometimes other fruits and nectar. there may be as few as 20000 pairs left in the wild and hunting pressure, for food and feathers, appears to be one of the reasons. Birds are still common in areas where they are not hunted. This specimen was donated by Mr P. H. Maxwell in 1942.
