Mechlin lace sample (lace sample)

Charlotte Treadwin (1820-1890)

Descriptions

Mechlin is the name used for a bobbin lace originally made in Flanders. This sample was collected by Charlotte Treadwin whose lace business was based in the Cathedral Yard. As well as lace, Mrs Treadwin sold millinery in her Exeter showrooms. Light and pretty Mechlin trimmings like this one were popular for dressing caps and bonnets. Several lengths of lace and ribbon were often layered to create a flounced edge.

This object is on display at RAMM in the Finders Keepers gallery.
