cotton dress (dress)
Descriptions
Georgina Pine married Henry Perry Cotton of the Bengal Lancers in St John’s Cathedral Kolkata (Calcutta), India in 1828 when she was 19. This lightweight cotton day dress may have been part of her wedding trousseau. Styled with a Van Dyck collar and embroidery in white cotton thread, it would have been suitable for a hot climate.
This dress was made at a time when cotton was still being grown by enslaved people on American plantations. Raw cotton was processed in British cotton mills. The mechanised factories of Lancashire proliferated in the 1820s.
