Exeter-based artist-collective Preston Street Union (PSU) were inspired by RAMM’s collection of wooden tillet printing blocks. Tillet block prints were used by Exeter wool merchants during the 18th century as a decorative branding on the fabric wrapping (tillet) that protected bolts of woollen cloth ready for export around the world.

PSU’s contemporary design, which draws attention to the creative industries, was carved into a wood block by Saena Ku using traditional carving methods. The title words ‘anyone may come and go’ are proclaimed during Exeter’s contemporary Lammas Day procession.

This print is a paper proof of a design printed on a re-imagined fabric tillet wrapper and displayed at RAMM in 2020. It was part of a wider project including research and performance relating to Exeter’s historic cloth trade.
