Gillie Hoyte Byrom hand paints enamels for a world-wide clientele from her studio in Dartington, Devon. She creates portrait miniatures using traditional vitreous enamel skills taught to her in Barcelona in 1990. some are of living people, others take their inspiration from historic artworks.

Techniques:
• Two coats of counter-enamel gold flux.
• Gold flux on top.
• Underlay of gold foil and superfine wire.
• Two coats of flux over gold underlay, allowing gold plate to show through in parts.
• Two coats Soyer opal white for areas to be painted.
• Stoned smooth with diagrit and fired.
• Hand painted over line drawing.
• Gold lustre used to detail cuffs.
• Fluxed over with three coats Blythes 139.
• Stoned and dipped into hydrofluoric acid, rinsed and refired.
• Polished with pumice slurry using mop on 1400 rpm motor.
• Minimum 26 firings.
