Gillie Hoyte Byrom hand paints enamels for a world-wide clientele from her studio in Dartington, Devon. She creates portrait miniatures using traditional vitreous enamel skills taught to her in Barcelona in 1990. some are of living people, others take their inspiration from historic artworks.

Original art work: Oil on panel 108.5mm x 81.8mm, with His Majesty the King.

Techniques:
• Two coats of counter-enamel gold flux.
• Gold flux and Soyer opal white on top.
• Applied line drawing.
• Laid gold filings and 23.5ct gold powder to sleeves and skirt.
• Stoned smooth with diagrit and fired.
• Painted surrounding background with underglaze black.
• Two coats flux 139 and gold flux over gold with Soyer opal white to areas to be painted.
• Applied second line drawing.
• Hand painted.
• Gold lustre used to embellish sleeves and skirt, jewellery and book.
• Finely graded flux 139 applied in three coats.
• Stoned with diagrit and dipped into hydrofluoric acid, rinsed and refired.
• Applied five more coats of thin paint to restore colour which had burnt out, using 139.
• Applied black line drawing for embroidered pattern over dress.
• Unable to polish enamel without further layers of protective flux.
• Already reached thickness limit and red would have reduced in tone.
• Minimum 38 firings.
