Descriptions

‘A View of the River Teign, Looking up River from Teignmouth towards Dartmoor’ by Thomas Luny, c.1831. The painting depicts a group of fishermen and women unloading the day’s catch from a ship on the beach with views up to Dartmoor.

Luny used some artistic licence when creating this scene. Shaldon Bridge, completed in 1826-27, is not shown. The cliffs on the right do seem a little steep. This is because when the railway was built in 1846 along the sea shore, the line was put on an embankment alongside the estuary. This altered the visual effect of the coast by reducing the apparent height of the cliffs.
