Gillie Hoyte Byrom hand paints enamels for a world-wide clientele from her studio in Dartington, Devon. She creates portrait miniatures using traditional vitreous enamel skills taught to her in Barcelona in 1990. some are of living people, others take their inspiration from historic artworks.

• Three coats of counter-enamel gold flux.
• Gold flux on top.
• Applied line drawing.
• Laid gold foil for skirt panels and shoulders, plus fine gold cloisonné wire (round and flat) to costume.
• Transparent black and Genevan ‘red copper’ enamel for gem stones.
• Wengers black and red underglaze to parts of background behind head and in curtain folds.
• 23.5ct powder used as paste to embellish sleeves and skirt.
• Limoges white (stronger than paint) for white areas of costume.
• Applied gold flux to transparent areas and Soyer opal white to areas for painting.
• Enhanced some areas of curtain with gold lustre to reinforce pattern.
• Applied second line drawing.
• Hand painted.
• Applied line drawing to surcote for embroidered detail and worked over with matt gold lustre.
• Both bright and matt gold lustre applied to jewellery detail, costume and dagger.
• Finely graded C4 flux applied in three coats.
• Stoned and refired.
• Polished with pumice slurry using mop on 1400 rpm motor.
• Minimum 30 firings.
