Descriptions
Bedford Circus was damaged by German bombs in the Exeter blitz of May 1942. Full demolition of the buildings started soon afterwards. This watercolour was painted on site in October or November 1942. It is a view looking away from the Circus towards Southernhay Church and shows a fully cleared area.
Gladys Best (1898-1965) lived in Topsham and captured many scenes around Exeter and Devon.
