The carving style of the Salishan-speaking peoples of the Columbia River area of Washington State employs a formal surface decoration that differs from the figural imagery of the more northerly regions. This elaborately carved bowl, with its high raised ends and designs of interlocking triangles, was used for ceremonial purposes. It’s likely to have been made in the late 18th century, or early 19th century.

This bowl was transferred to the Museum in 1865, and was once owned by Francis William Locke Ross of Topsham.
