Descriptions
The large hawk-cuckoo is a big cuckoo with a superficially hawk-like demeanour, hence the name. Its breeding range centres on Indochina but extends across the Himalayas and up into China itself. It winters in southern India and the Greater Sunda region. It calls at night as well as at dawn and dusk. There is still some uncertainty about the host species that it uses. It may be laughingthrushes but spiderhunters are also possibilities. This specimen came from Assam and was donated by Mr P. H. Maxwell in 1942.
