Other names for this plant include monkey-bread tree because the soft, dry fruit is edible and upside-down tree because the branches look like roots. It is also known as cream of tartar tree as it is the original source of this cooking ingredient. Today cream of tartar (potassium bitartrate) is sourced from the wine making industry where it is a by-product.
