container for wine or oil (vessel (sherd))

Descriptions

A fragment of an amphora; a large pottery vessel used to ship goods such as oil and wine around the Roman world. This one is unusual as it has a small cross scratched onto it. The cross may be an ownership or accounting mark or it might be a partial version of the tau-rho cross. This cross is named after the Greek letters tau ‘T’ and rho ‘P’ which when joined together were used as an early Christian symbol to represent the crucified Christ.

This object is not on display.
