Tudor and Jacobean Houses, High Street Exeter (print) (Print)
Descriptions
This colourised print is dated 1940 and shows numbers 226, 227, 228, 229 and 230 High Street, Exeter.
Second from the right is 229 High Street, which had been one of the grandest residences in Exeter until its demolition in 1930. Incredibly, its interiors were sold to William Randolph Hearst (an American media magnate) and shipped off to the United States. By 1940 it had been completely rebuilt in ornate Jacobean style.
During the Blitz bombings of May 1942 the building was badly damaged by fire and little of the ornate facade was salvaged.
Frances Marjorie Hayman was a student at the Royal Albert Memorial College of Art, Exeter around 1920-1925 and exhibited at the Exeter Art Society.
This object is not on display.
