Descriptions

Ellen Herbert compiled an album of lace samples collected by Charlotte Treadwin. Some were antique and some are her own award-winning designs inspired by her collection.

This object is not on display.


The following text is transcribed from pages that precede the samples.

Collection Of specimens of Lace made by Miss Ellen Herbert of The Close, Exeter, and bequeathed to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum by her, in memory of Mrs C. E. Treadwin, 1929.

12 92 A square of Honiton lace which lined a box sent to the Prince Imperial 1855; it has the French Bee worked in each corner.  In the centre is a much older Honiton sprig known in the trade as Napoleon’s Hand, from being made in the time of the 1st Napoleon.

20 153 This piece was part of the border of the flounce which was made for the Great Exhibition of 1851 for which a Prize medal was awarded. The reader will perceive that all this pattern is double raised, thus taking much time without an equivalent effect.
