Japanese armour

This theme is concerned with armour from Japan. It explores a small selection of traditional samurai armour and associated items held within RAMM’s collection. Although donated to the museum in the 19th century, the examples shown here were made centuries before by skilled artisans who manufactured weapons and armour for the samurai. In the late 1800s, Japan wanted to become a modern nation. The samurai class represented the old ways and were therefore an obstacle to progress. Many skilled artisans therefore turned their attention to the West where a new economic market reflected a growing demand for Oriental art.
