About the time of Cook’s visit to Tonga, local fishermen were using a trolling lure hook, (pa) about twice as large as the standard bonito lure (pa ‘atu) used by other Polynesian fishermen. Tunny and bonito were caught with these hooks from the stern of the canoe.
