Fan

Description
This fan has sticks of ivory with a painted paper leaf. It shows three scenes of Naples, with the central scene showing the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius erupting. Given the subject, it was probably brought back to England as a souvenir of the Grand Tour.

This appears to be a Grand Tour fan with Vesuvius in the central panel: if so, it is a small contribution to the knowledge of women’s experience of Italy and the Grand Tour at the end of the 18C.
