Jug
- Description
-
This is a flat based jug with a squat round bellied shape, a short neck and a trefoil spout. It has a tall, rounded, vertical handle and its cream coloured clay is overlaid with brown decorated with bands of brown-black around its body. Written on the jug is the word ‘Scandia’ which is a term used by some Greek and Roman geographers for islands in Northern Europe. This word must have been written on the vessel by the person who found or collected it, but unfortunately no records survive to show who this was.
