This photographic slide by Alfred Oliver Rowden shows a street scene, likely in Baghdad. The signs on the left of the image are written in English, the upper one reads ‘London Restaurant Welcome’ and the lower sign points the way ‘to Public Mortuary’. Rowden was in Mesopotamia during the First World War and was not sent home until 1919 or 1920. He photographed scenes like this to record his experiences.
