Magic Lantern Slide: British soldier next to horse-powered irrigation mechanism
- Description
- This slide by Alfred Oliver Rowden shows a horse-powered irrigation system in use in Iraq in the first quarter of the twentieth century. The angle the horse is walking at shows the power required to make the system work. Rowden was in Mesopotamia during the First World War and was not sent home until 1919 or 1920. He photographed daily scenes like this to record his experiences.
