- This slide by Alfred Oliver Rowden shows local people in Mesopotamia using donkeys as a form of transport. Donkeys had been for transport and ploughing in Mesopotamia since ancient times and continue to be used today. Rowden was in Mesopotamia during the First World War and was not sent home until 1919 or 1920. He photographed daily scenes like this to record his experiences.
