Magic Lantern Slide: Local man in small boat on river

This slide by Alfred Oliver Rowden shows a man in a ‘gufa’ boat. Gufas were constructed of reeds and bitumen and a round shape. Rowden also has photographs showing these boats brimming with passengers, but this slide shows only one man using this gufa. Rowden was in Mesopotamia during the First World War and was not sent home until 1919 or 1920. He photographed daily scenes like this to record his experiences.
