This lamp was described by its collector as ‘Roman of the 1st. century A.C. (sic) 2.9 in. long Elongated shape with voluted, rounded nozzle and rudimentary handle. Plain discus with central filling-hole. Buff-coloured clay with traces of dark glaze. (Lawrence coll.)’. It belonged to Lieutenant Colonel Montague whose collection of over 800 classical archaeological objects is an important resource in the museum collections.
