Finger ring with intaglio ringstone

Description
This ringstone shows the draped bust of a bearded god or man, in profile to the right wearing a head band. The face has an intense expression with parted lips, deep-set eyes and heavy brow. His hair is engraved to show soft waves below his headband. The image is thought to represent the Greek god Zeus. The ringstone was made during the Roman period and has been mounted in a gold ring which dates from the 18th century. At that time ancient Roman culture was very fashionable among wealthy Europeans.
