“Ahakoa he iti he pounamu” is a Maori proverb (whakatauki) which means “although it is small it is precious.” Nephrite (pounamu) was a prestigious and highly valued stone that it was used to forge relationships through trade and exchange. This group includes ear ornaments (kuru), one of which is in the shape of an adze.
