This gourd comes from Bussa, which was the capital of the Borgu Emirate in north Nigeria. It was also at the highest navigable point on the Niger River. It may have come from an explorer who bore witness to this. James Bandinel who acquired it would certainly have had an interest in this region because he was head of the anti-slavery office of the Foreign Office and acted as advisor on African Affaires to politicians.
Acquired by James Bandinel 1819-49 whilst working in the anti-slavery department at the Foreign Office.
